Power Distribution
Box
When someone thinks of a
'power distribution box', they are typically considering one of
three things, all of which we've highlighted in the pictures
below. Which type of power distribution box were you looking
for?
|
|
Power Distribution Boxes,
or Power Distribution Center
These heavy-duty pieces of
equipment are great for construction sites,
whether that is
a home
remodel, or a big-time development
project.

|
Power Distribution Box, or
Power Distribution Panel
The specific box in the
picture to the left supports power distribution
to up to 18 CCTV cameras
simultaneously.
A power distribution box that
supports 9 cameras is also available; click on
the picture, then adjust the search for a 9
camera box.

|
Power Distribution Box, or
Temporary Power Distribution
Center
These are essentially
heavy-duty power cords or strips, and
typically operate by plugging
into a mobile generator.

What is a power distribution
box?
A power distribution box
can be basically a power strip with multiple outlets which
can be used to reliably provide power to various networking
equipment.
Most of the time, the power
distribution box is coupled with an uninterruptible power
supply (UPS). In cases of networking all its devices
require continuous source of power. The power source can
range from a generator to a UPS.
 |
A metered
power distribution box is similar to the
basic power distribution box, but it has the
capacity to monitor the total amount of
current which has flown through the
box.
The amount of
current is measured in
amps.
|
A switched power
distribution box, in addition to the characteristics of
the basic and metered form of the distribution box, is
equipped with capacity to switch off the power without
being physically present at the site, with the aid of an
ethernet network connection.
This form of power
distribution box is beneficial for equipment which is
stored in locked areas, etc, because the power can be
switched on and off remotely. People who are appointed to
deal with the network applications can save themselves
the pain of traveling to each and every site where the
equipment has been placed, for switching the power on or
off.
Auto transfer switch is another feature
which is available with both switched and metered form of
power distribution box. In these boxes,
there are primarily two inputs for power cords, known as
primary and secondary inputs.
|
This helps in providing power from two
different systems of UPS. The power which
generally passes through the automatic transfer
switch depends on the primary input, but if the
flow of current stops due to certain reasons
then power will be derived from the secondary
input as a systematic switching system is found
in the auto transfer switch.

 |
Metered power distribution
boxes reduce the scope of overload; the long
power cord accentuates the flexibility which is required
during the installation of equipments which are located
far away from the source of power
input.
The high current plugs and low input
power cord, which helps in converting high powered
outlets into various low powered outlets and this
feature, is available in a few selected models of power
distribution boxes.
